Bali, Indonesia Travel Update: New Entry Requirements

Effective on December 2, 2021, the Indonesian Government published the latest Indonesia travel update responding to the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, omicron.

How Omicron Was Discovered

Cited from CNN, the new variant was identified when Lancet Laboratories, South Africa noticed a missing genome profile of the coronavirus, indicating that it has evolved to a new one. The breakthrough coincided with the rising positive cases for coronavirus in several parts of South Africa. The first case of Omicron was detected in Bostwana, then subsequently to South Africa.

However, this doesn’t justify the origin of the virus. Travel history might have been one of the reasons for the outbreak. Moreover, the case that befell the 4 unfortunate travellers who were just about to leave Bostwana on November 11 was revealed positive with the new variant. Different parts of the world like Europe starting to report the issue also around November 2021. Until today, there are still no clues on how dangerous this new variant is. Also, we still have no clue how effective the vaccine can tackle this one down.

The virus has infiltrated several countries like Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

To anticipate the surge of the new variant and the high risks of the lack capacity of healthcare in Indonesia from the sudden increase, until further notice the Indonesian Government decided to suspend those foreign travelers within 14 days to enter Indonesia. For Indonesia travel update, those travellers include in the following:

  • Angola,
  • Botswana,
  • Eswatini,
  • Hong Kong,
  • Lesotho,
  • Malawi,

Following the new restrictions, the Indonesian Government also extends the days of quarantine for international arrivals. Moreover, the extension ranges from 7 days to 10 days. Also, this is to avoid the invasion of the COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529.
